Research carried out by the project has shown that drain blocking on blanket bog can benefit stock safety. The open drains are a dangerous trap for stock as they are unable to get out and in many cases drown or starve to death. Blocking the drains, in particular on well used stock paths across the moor, can provide crossing points for the animals.
The pools behind the dams are also obvious markers for stock and in areas where re-profiling or complete infilling of the drains has taken place the threat is removed completely. This management has also shown to provide animals with more access to the heavily drained areas which begins to reduce issues of under- or over-grazing across the whole moor.
