Published on 31/Jul/2007The last Sunday in July is International Bog Day. It is designed as an annual event to celebrate the beauty of bogs and to help conserve them. Bogs are fantastic, but becoming increasingly rare, due to many pressures including land drainage.
Around the UK and the world, there are a series of events highlighting wetland habitat and the importance of these areas to wildlife and in human history. The event is celebrated in a number of countries including Ireland, Canada and Russia.
In the United Kingdom, there are events at a wide range of sites including Peatlands Park, The New Forest, the RSPB reserve at Forsinard and Fenn's, Whixall and Bettisfield Moss.
The LIFE Blanket Bog Project at Lake Vyrnwy, Powys, celebrated the day in 2007 by having:
a guided walk to the blanket bog
an organic barbeque
face painting
rock painting
