The LIFE Project and the Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group, Wales held a joint conference on Tuesday 9 June 2009 at the Lake Vyrnwy Hotel and the RSPB Lake Vyrnwy Reserve. The ninety-four attendees included farmers, farming unions, NGO’s, wildlife charities and governmental organisations.
The day was chaired by Alun Edwards, FWAG Cymru Chairman and was opened by Welsh Assembly Member Mick Bates. Talks were then given by Dr Jared Wilson, LIFE Project Manager entitled “Introduction to the LIFE Active Blanket Bog in Wales Project”; David Jenkins, Coed Cymru entitled “Wider issues of land management: a case study from Pontbren”; and the key note address was given by John Westlake, Welsh Assembly Government entitled “The future of agri-environment in Wales”.
After lunch the group split into two with one half heading onto the mountain to see the grip blocking work that was carried out over the winter. The other group viewed the machinery used in the project and had an opportunity to talk to the contractor involved. The groups then swapped over before heading back to the Lake Vyrnwy Hotel where Alun Edwards summed up the day.
