LIFE at the National Eisteddfod

The National Eisteddfod this year is being held in Y Bala, Gwynedd between Saturday 1 August and Saturday 8 August.

The National Eisteddfod of Wales is a major festival which provides an opportunity for visitors to be part of a convivial gathering to celebrate Wales' wealth of culture. This year, due to Y Bala being in the heart of the Project’s area, we will have a stand on the Maes. Members of the team and the partner organisations will be on hand to discuss the project with all the visitors and a series of activities, aimed at the young and young at heart, will be on throughout the week. These include colouring, badge making, papier mâché and getting close to the bog with our portable mountain! There will also be walks back at Lake Vyrnwy for those who wish to see it for themselves.

The main attraction for the project is our involvement in the Natur ein Bro project which is run by CCW. This year, eight primary schools from the Y Bala area have visited the project at Lake Vyrnwy where they were taken up onto the blanket bog. On the mountain they looked at the peat and the associated habitat and water. The most fun was had by taking it in turns to jump on the “jelly” to make the ground move for everyone else!

The children have since been back in the classroom with Twm Morys, Wales’ Children’s Poet for 2009/10 to create a piece for the Eisteddfod. On the Sunday, the children will be in the Babell Lên to perform their work in public so one and all are welcome to support them.

We hope to talk to as many people as possible and let them know just what is on the mountains surrounding Y Bala, so come and say hello if you’re down on the Maes.
