LIFE on the Maes at the National Eisteddfod

The LIFE Project attended the National Eisteddfod in Bala between Saturday 1 August and Saturday 8 August 2009. The project had its own stand on the Maes and was visited by around 1000 people over the week.

The project was lucky enough to become involved in the Natur ein Bro project through our association with CCW. This is an annual project, which involves local schools to the National Eisteddfod site (this year the schools were all from the Y Bala area). The schools visited the LIFE Project at Lake Vyrnwy in May and June. The visiting schools were:

Ysgol OM Edwards

Ysgol Llandrillo

Ysgol Bro Tryweryn

Ysgol y Ffridd

Ysgol y Parc

Ysgol Maes Hyfryd

Ysgol Beuno Sant

Ysgol Bro Tegid

In total, 110 children visited the project as part of Natur ein Bro. Whilst at Lake Vyrnwy the children learnt more about the importance of peat bogs to the environment and were able to look at how the project is restoring this habitat.

The children then went back into school and worked with the Welsh National Children’s Poet, Twm Morys to create a piece of poetry. During the National Eisteddfod week, the children performed their excellent poetry in the Babell Lên (the Literature Tent) on the Sunday of the Eisteddfod.

The children were featured on the S4C coverage of the Eisteddfod and were mentioned by Gerallt Pennant on Radio Cymru and members of staff from RSPB and CCW on BBC Radio Cymru during the week.

The stand on the Maes included general information and photos from the Project; a portable “mountain” including blanket bog species which was loaned to the Project by Plantlife; a slideshow of images from the Project; a poem about the Berwyn Mountains written by local poet Robin Hughes; and the poetry written by the children as part of Natur ein Bro.

The Project also had a number of activities for children throughout the week including badge making, colouring, keyring making and wordsearches. These activities were very popular and alongside the project’s leaflets and newsletters they drew in a large number of people.

The week was very successful for the project and we spoke to many people from the Bala area, local farmers interested in the project and individuals from around Wales and the rest of Europe.
