European School Teachers Visit Project

On Friday 29th January, the project hosted a visit from European education specialists and decision makers from the Lifelong Learning Partnership and Ecotec. The nine teachers from countries including Poland, Turkey, Austria and Greece, came to observe how school pupils benefit from visiting environmental projects such as the LIFE Active Blanket Bog project.

The teachers and fifteen year 10 students from Llanfyllin High School were given a talk about the project by Mike Morris and then taken up onto the moors in a convoy of land rovers to be shown the blanket bog. In spite of the cold and snow, Mike, Jan Evans and Fiona Walker managed to show the students the ditch blocking work, hydrological monitoring and vegetation. There was even the chance to play with the group shelters and have a quick snowball fight, once the sun had come out!

After lunch, the students, many of which are young farmers, and teachers were taken to the RSPB farm where Jan explained how an organic farm was run and how the farm was benefiting from the restoration work being carried out by the project.

Despite many of the teachers from the more southerly European countries not being used to such cold weather, an enjoyable and educational day was had by all!

The day was given some publicity when Jan Evans spoke about the visit on BBC Radio Cymru on Galwad Cynnar on Saturday 30th January. Click here to listen.
